Why is beauty so important to people? And why is perfection important to people?

What could be the dangers of chasing after beauty and perfection? And why is it so important to people?|||It is 'appeal' and it says, 'I am ok'.

Even a slight scratch on a car's paintwork or a dent in the body, while maybe not impairing engine function, still says something is wrong in this world - it is not the way it rolled off the production line, a mishap occurred, this life has marred it....

To have achieved and sustained a beautiful state of perfection for so long that it is the norm is just an exercise in earning the laurels you could rest on for it - in such a world pension schemes would not fail, health care would be the best ever, memories would all be treasurable....|||Everything is beaty, is a world run by beaty. While the ugly are working backstage. Ex. models and the ones seting everything up aren't so "perfect".|||Some people spend their lives searching for perfection but it's just not possible because we are all human and humans are never perfect. Personally I don't care about perfection or beauty, I just want a normal, average girl.|||Because people are always so worried about what people think...|||This is a huge question. Really delving into the way the human mind works, seriously - very deep.

If you don't mind - I'll answer a little superficially.

When I was sixteen I had an enormous group of friends, and we met regularly and had good times. That was pretty much the extent of things. We never arranged meetings because we all used to gravitate toward a particular spot at a particular time. I'm sure if I were to be transported to that spot at that time right now, I would be horrified by everyone there - but my memories are happy!

Nowadays it seems young people can't even go to the toilet without "twittering" to the world that they're doing it, in real time. Or posting a picture of the "event" onto their facebook page.

Why? Mobile phone cameras, that's why.

It seems that with CCTV, cameras in every phone and reality telly - nobody expects to leave the house these days without being 'captured' and then shared and judged on the internet.

As for perfection, as people accept that they're going to be the next YouTube sensation and make millions they feel that they have to look perfect at all times.

So, those are the reasons that a certain class of people feel that beauty and "perfection" are important.

As for the dangers of this obsession?

The ex-Princess, commoner Diana Spencer anyone? Jade Goody?|||Ego, and the human tendency to want more no matter how "successful" they are. I really recommend reading "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle. It answers this in detail, why people strive to be perfect.|||It is only important to those who chase it. Fact of the matter is that perfection is unattainable. There is a saying that beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that is very true otherwise less than beautiful people would never marry. Media has a large part to play. When I was a child body image and beauty did not figure in our lives. These days children as young as 5 or 6 are concerned about body image, being thin and beautiful. That is one of the reasons for eating disorders be it bulimia or anorexia. It is all about being what is considered to be socially acceptable which is a shame really as it should be about being accepted as the person anyone is and not what they look like.|||Beauty is important in this world we live in because every one wants to be comfortable in their skin.

You can develop skin cancer from tanning so much.

Plastic surgery can be fatal in the end, even after the surgery went well.|||Chasing after perfection is better than settling with mediocrity.
